  1. Has there ever been a process to assess detainees for literacy and numeracy levels, either on intake or otherwise, during the 17 years the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) has operated, given that the Brink Literacy Project cites studies which show that prisoners who engage with literacy programmes in prison are 43 percent less likely to reoffend.
  2. In relation to the answer to question on notice No 617, (a) can the Minister detail the support provided by the volunteer referenced who provides literacy support to detainees at the AMC, (b) how much time does the volunteer spend with detainees on average in their weekly session, (c) what is the maximum number of detainees that support is available to during the weekly session and (d) how many detainees have made use of the support available in the 2024-2025 reporting period.
  3. How many weeks of the 2024-2025 reporting period was the volunteer referred to in part (2) unavailable to detainees at the AMC.
