Question asked

Does the Government have any plans to review legislation for smoke alarms for older properties, given that (a) the current legislation states that all properties built after the 1 May 2014, or that have undergone major renovations or extensions, must have smoke alarms that are connected to 240 mains power and be interconnected (where there is more than one) so that when one sounds, they all sound, leaving older properties without interconnected alarms, and (b) the Fire and Emergency Services (Domestic Smoke Alarms) Amendment Act 2016 (Qld) requires that by 1 January 2027, all homes must have photoelectric smoke alarms compliant with AS 3786–2014, alarms must be installed in every bedroom, hallway, and storey and that alarms must be interconnected, so if one activates, they all sound and that the legislation was passed following coronial recommendations and received bipartisan support in the Queensland parliament.
